The operative board is urging the public to continue to adhere to the protection measures in place, a spokesman for the National Police Headquarters said at an online press conference on Monday by the operative board responsible for controlling the coronavirus epidemic.

“It is very important that we keep the results we have achieved together in order to slow down the spread of the coronavirus epidemic,” added Lieutenant Colonel Kristóf Gál.

The spokesman reported that although it was forbidden to hold events or rallies during the emergency, private individuals announced a rally at the Heroes’ Square in Budapest on Sunday, which several people attended. Police officers verified the identities of those present at the meeting, then warned them, and initiated administrative proceedings against the organizers and hosts of the meeting. Two people were fined on the spot for violating the rules of wearing a mask, and four were arrested.

According to the lieutenant colonel, the police acted against 607 people over the weekend for failing to wear a mask, bringing the number of measures ordered for irregular mask wearing to 22,550.

Kristóf Gál said that 523 people did not wear the mask in public, despite the municipal decrees, 20 people were fined because they did not wear a mask on buses, trams and stops, and 64 did not wear protective equipment in shopping malls or other enclosed spaces.

Violations of the restrictive rules on shops, restaurants, accommodation and leisure facilities have so far required 834 police measures. Of these, 236 cases of negligence on the part of the operator or owner were identified and 598 cases of non-compliance with the rules on limited opening hours.

He said that over the weekend, police fined 1,532 people for violating curfew rules, one of whom violated the 500-meter walk area for dogs. At the time of the curfew, which came into force on 4 November, and the curfew that replaced it on 11 November, they had to take action against offenders in 32,052 cases, said Kristóf Gál.

Passengers passing through Hungary were also checked on weekends, and 228 cases of violations of transit rules were reported on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Passengers have been screened since September, and 10,794 measures have been taken against non-compliant people so far.

On Sunday, 8105 cases were personally checked by police since, currently, 13,810 people are in official home quarantine. Of these, 1698 undertook to have the police electronically verify their compliance with quarantine rules, the lieutenant colonel explained.

When asked if they would take action on community sites against publishers of fake vaccines’ news, he said that the police are constantly monitoring content on the internet and they also receive a number of public signals.

He said the police are always investigating whether a crime is being committed in relation to the content in question. The fact that someone’s content reaches or exceeds the stimulus threshold does not mean that an infringement is taking place, he said. He added that if this does happen, the police will take the necessary action each time and there is also the possibility of making objectionable content inaccessible through the service provider.

He asked citizens to be careful before sharing content on social media because sharing false news could not only severely impede defense but also lead to an offense that could result in police action.
