One of the types of inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn’s disease, which primarily affects young adults, is now being treated with stem cell transplantation in Pécs – the University of Pécs, which operates the regional center’s clinics.
The disease, which is often complicated by rectal fistula, is traditionally treated with surgery, the long-term effectiveness of which is helped by the procedure involving the implantation of stem cells, which was used for the first time at the surgical clinic on Tuesday, the announcement said. Quoting József Baracs, the assistant professor of the institutional unit, they stated: the main symptoms of Crohn’s disease are weight loss, mucous, sometimes bloody diarrhea and cramping abdominal pain.
The exact cause of the disease is still unknown, but its development can be influenced by genetic predisposition, autoimmune origin, disruption of the balance of intestinal flora, disruption of the integrity of the intestinal mucosa, psychological factors, and smoking. The disease can last a lifetime and cannot be cured in principle, but with continuous treatment and care, symptom relief can be achieved.
According to the announcement, stem cell therapy is a breakthrough in the treatment of fistulas around the anus, during which stem cells are injected directly into the passage, which have the property of being able to transform into any type of cell, depending on the tissue they enter. In this case, they transform into connective tissue cells and thus help the fistulas to close. In a clinical trial, the recovery rate of patients treated with stem cells and those treated with placebo was compared, which showed that the stem cell therapy was well tolerated, and the improvement in condition was much higher in the stem cell group – announced the PTE.
Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that mostly affects young adults, affecting one in two hundred people. The disease can affect the entire alimentary canal, from the oral cavity to the anus, causing ulcers and ulcers anywhere. The disease was named after the American internist Burrill Bernard Crohn, who first reported the disease.
