The Debrecen Zoo has two new residents: a capybara and a Cameroon sheep.
The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the largest rodent in the world. Close relatives are guinea pigs and rock cavies. Native to South America, the capybara inhabits savannas and dense forests and lives near bodies of water. It is a highly social species and can be found in groups as large as 100 individuals, but usually lives in groups of 10–20 individuals. With the arrival of the new capybara, there are six of them at the zoo.
The Cameroon is a domesticated breed of sheep from West Africa but has been exported to Europe. As of 2008, there were less than 650 but the population was increasing.
