Hundreds of employees at Google are protesting against launching China’s new censored search engine.Protesters say Google’s plans raise serious moral and ethical issues and urge the company to improve its transparency. They emphasized: employees of the company need to know exactly what they are developing.
Google – owned by Alphabet – left China 8 years ago because of China’s strict censorship and government pressure. Last month, however, the news came up that they were secretly working on a new Chinese search service called the Dragonfly. The search engines that China still has to allow will ban certain websites including human rights or religious sites.
Many of Google’s employees have been shocked by the news, and in their letter, they also claim that such a product breaches a clause in their code of ethics that their service can not serve evil purposes.
